About This Class

Ready to rethink what your walking foot can do? In this two-day workshop with artist and instructor David Owen Hastings, you will explore a modern, layered approach to machine quilting using simple quilt sandwiches as your canvas. Instead of stitching in the ditch or relying on overall patterns, you will experiment with overlapping motifs, varied thread colors, and added hand stitching to create rich texture and depth. The focus is on play, discovery, and building confidence with your walking foot. This is an all-levels workshop. Basic walking foot experience is helpful, but not required, and you will leave with new skills and a mini quilt that showcases your layered quilting designs.

What We’ll Cover

Using a series of small quilt sandwiches, you will learn how to build up quilting designs in stages, combining machine and hand stitching for a modern, textural look. David will guide you through planning just enough to get started, then responding intuitively to the piecing and previous lines of quilting as you add new layers.

  • Approaching walking foot quilting in an improv friendly way
  • Using piecing as inspiration for quilting motifs
  • Layering multiple quilting designs with different thread colors
  • Adding big stitch hand quilting for extra texture and emphasis
  • Joining quilt sandwiches with streamlined gussets
  • Finishing with a simple face binding and integrated sleeve
  • Developing a modern, layered quilting style you can use on future projects
