HQ Longarm March Madness

Come join us at this unique, hands-on longarm event. This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of longarm quilting or learn new longarm techniques through an intensive hands-on experience. Six Amara Handi Quilter machines will be available for use during these classes. Class size is limited to twelve participants.


Sign up for session one (March 4 & 5) or session two (March 6 & 7); they are the same. Each session consists of four classes over two days. See below for the specific classes.

Day One—morning—Stand-Up Longarm Machine Quilting Basics

Does longarm quilting interest you and you’d like to learn more about it? Or do you just want a review of longarm basics? This class removes the mystery of longarm quilting by explaining machine and frame elements and features, how to load a quilt, and vital facts about thread, needles, and tension.

Topics Include:
Basic machine and frame elements and features
Bobbins, tension, needles, and thread
How to load a quilt onto a frame
Quilting with Groovy Boards and pantographs
Rulers, Micro Handles, and basic free motion

Day One—afternoon—Fast, Fun, and Fabulous Free-Motion Quilting

Quilters everywhere love the excitement and fun of free-motion quilting—and it’s easier than you think! Create flowing designs by connecting simple design elements with continuous lines, traveling across the quilt or filling in a specific area. Learn how drawing and muscle memory contribute to beautiful free motion quilting and how to create stunning designs.

Topics Include:
How to develop an inventory of free-motion designs
Proper scaling of design elements
Edge-to-edge free-motion quilting
Adjusting your quilting path to create your own new designs
Using Micro Handles for free-motion control

Day Two—morning—Ruler Essentials

If you love precision and consistency in your quilting designs, you will love using design rulers and templates! These handy tools assist in placing designs accurately and stitching them out precisely. Learn to handle rulers and template safely with the ruler base and Sure Foot, and how to achieve accuracy with the markings. The wide variety of rulers will inspire you to new design heights!

Topics Include:
Handle rulers safely
Understand and use ruler markings for precision and accuracy
Use piecing lines and marking tools to build ruler design confidence
Versa tool quilting: stitch in the ditch, cross hatch, piano keys, clamshells, and arcs
Apply binding with the HQ VersaTool

Day Two—afternoon—Intro to the Pro-Stitcher

Pro-Stitcher is an intuitive computer-guided quilting system. It’s user friendly and simple to operate. The step-by-step process for each function is easy and fun. Whether finishing your own quilts or considering a quilting business, come see the elegant and precise quilting you can accomplish with a Pro-Stitcher. New owners—start here!

Overview of menu and basic functions and design catalog
Fit a design to a block using Skew and Resize, Xform and Align
Demonstration of Pro-Stitcher Simulator

Instructor Name:
Gina Siembieda, Handi Quilter National Educator
Instructor Bio:
Gina started sewing at age twelve when her grandmother gave her a sewing machine. It was love at first stitch and she has been sewing ever since.

Having purchased her first longarm quilting machine in 2003, Gina has years of experience on a variety of different brands and sizes of machines, but Handi Quilter is her favorite. She has over twenty million stitches to show for it! She presently quilts with an HQ Infinity with Pro-Stitcher. She comes from a long line of teachers and teaches machine quilting on both longarm and domestic machines.

Gina has had quilts entered at Road to California, has received blue ribbons at county fairs, and has been honored to be the featured quilter for one of her guilds shows. She most enjoys making quilts of comfort for charities and gifts for family and friends.
